Quantum Industry Coalition Responds to NIST RFI on Chinese Influence in the Development of International Standards for Emerging Technologies

WASHINGTON, DC, December 6, 2021 — The Quantum Industry Coalition (QIC) responded to a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Request for Information on the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) policies and influence in the development of international standards for emerging technologies.  Responses to the RFI will inform an upcoming NIST study responding to congressional concerns that China could influence the creation of international standards to be advantageous to itself and adverse to fair competition and innovation.  QIC’s response can be found in full here.

The response highlights the unique role the US private sector plays in ensuring fair international standards: “It is ultimately the US private sector that will commercialize quantum technologies to the point that standard-setting becomes necessary.  By promoting an industry-led, consensus-based approach to international standard-setting, NIST can help ensure that all stakeholders are involved in the process and that neither PRC nor any other self-interested stakeholder can gain undue influence.”

The response also encouraged the US Government not only to fund R&D, but also to act as a customer of US quantum companies in order to hasten the commercialization and standardization of quantum technologies.
